Why Koh Samui Is the Perfect Gulf Hub

Koh Samui sits at the centre of the Gulf of Thailand's island triangle. Koh Phangan is 30 minutes by ferry. Koh Tao is 2 hours. Ang Thong Marine Park — 42 islands of limestone karsts, hidden lagoons, and pristine beaches — is a 45-minute speedboat ride. No other Thai island gives you this much variety this close.

The ferry infrastructure is excellent. Three operators — Lomprayah, Seatran Discovery, and Raja Ferry — run multiple daily services between all the Gulf islands. You can book everything through 12Go, which compares all operators, shows real-time availability, and sends e-tickets to your phone.

Whether you do day trips from Samui or hop between islands for a week, this guide covers every route, every operator, and the honest timing you need to plan it properly.

Ang Thong National Marine Park

This is Koh Samui's crown jewel. An archipelago of 42 islands about 30km northwest of Samui, with dramatic limestone cliffs, hidden sea caves, the famous Emerald Lake (Thalay Nai), and some of the clearest water in the Gulf. It inspired the setting for Alex Garland's The Beach, and it lives up to the hype.

Day Trip Options

Most visitors do a speedboat day trip from Samui — these typically run from 7:30am to 5pm and include:

Prices range from THB 1,700–2,800 depending on the operator and boat size. Speedboat tours have smaller groups (20–25 people) and more time at each stop. Large boat tours are cheaper but slower and more crowded.

What Nobody Tells You About Ang Thong

The park entrance fee (THB 300 for foreigners) is NOT included in most tour prices — you'll pay it cash at the pier on arrival. The viewpoint hike to the Emerald Lake is 500 steps up in tropical heat — bring proper shoes (not flip-flops) and at least 1 litre of water. The snorkelling is good but not as spectacular as Koh Tao — you come for the scenery, not the coral. And the park closes during the worst monsoon weather (usually November — check before booking).

Overnight in the Park

For a completely different experience, you can camp overnight on Koh Wua Talap inside the park. Basic bungalows (THB 1,000–2,000) and tent rentals (THB 300) are available through the national park office — not through tour operators. You'll see the viewpoint at sunset without the day-trip crowds and have the beaches to yourself in the morning. Bring your own food or eat at the basic canteen. Book directly through the DNP (Department of National Parks) website.

Pack a head torch if you're staying overnight — there's no street lighting and the path to the bungalows is unlit after dark. A DEET repellent is also essential — mosquitoes on the park islands are aggressive at dusk.

Koh Phangan — 30 Minutes Away

Koh Phangan is famous for the Full Moon Party but there's far more to it. Thong Nai Pan beaches (north coast), Bottle Beach (only accessible by boat or jungle trek), yoga retreats, and a laid-back vibe that's genuinely different from Samui's resort polish. It's the island many people go to and end up staying longer than planned.

Getting There

Multiple daily ferries from Samui, departing from Bangrak Pier (Big Buddha Pier) and Nathon Pier. Journey time: 30 minutes. Three operators:

OperatorFromTimePrice
LomprayahBangrak Pier30 minTHB 350–400
Seatran DiscoveryBangrak Pier30 minTHB 250–350
Raja FerryNathon Pier45 minTHB 200 (car ferry)

Book through 12Go — especially around Full Moon Party dates when ferries sell out 3–4 days ahead. The morning-after return ferries are equally rammed. If you're doing a day trip, the 8am and 9am departures give you the most time on the island; the last ferry back is usually around 5:30pm (check 12Go for exact times on your date).

Day Trip or Stay?

A day trip works for the beaches and a taste of the island, but if you want the Full Moon Party, yoga retreats, or the north coast beaches (Thong Nai Pan, Bottle Beach), stay at least 2–3 nights. The north coast is 45 minutes by scooter from Thong Sala Pier — too far for a day trip. Budget: THB 800–1,500/night for a decent guesthouse.

Koh Tao & Koh Nang Yuan

Koh Tao is Thailand's dive capital. It offers the cheapest PADI certification in the world (from THB 9,000 for Open Water), crystal-clear water, and a backpacker energy that Koh Samui lost years ago. Koh Nang Yuan — a tiny trio of islands connected by a sandbar — has one of the most photographed viewpoints in Southeast Asia.

Getting There

Lomprayah catamaran from Bangrak Pier: 2 hours, THB 600–850. Seatran runs a similar service. Both stop at Koh Phangan en route, so you can break the journey. Book through 12Go — peak season ferries fill up, especially the morning departure that divers use.

Day Trip vs Multi-Night

A day trip to Koh Tao from Samui is tight — 2 hours each way leaves you 4–5 hours on the island. It's doable if you just want Koh Nang Yuan and a quick snorkel, but not enough to dive. If you're doing PADI certification, budget 3–4 nights minimum on Koh Tao. Accommodation is cheap (THB 500–1,000/night) and the island is small enough to walk everywhere.

Koh Nang Yuan charges a THB 100 entrance fee and bans plastic bottles (they'll make you transfer your water into a cup). The viewpoint hike takes 20 minutes and the views are genuinely stunning. Bring your own snorkel mask — the rental gear on the island is overpriced and poor quality. Reef shoes are essential — the beach has sharp coral fragments.

The Gulf Triangle: Samui → Phangan → Tao

This is the classic Gulf of Thailand island-hopping route and one of the best multi-island itineraries in Southeast Asia. Start on Samui for beaches and temples, ferry to Phangan for the party or yoga scene, then continue to Koh Tao for diving. Fly out of Samui (Bangkok Airways) or reverse-ferry back to Surat Thani for a budget flight home.

Recommended Itinerary: 10 Days

Gulf Triangle — 10-Day Route

Days 1–4: Koh Samui. Beaches, Big Buddha, Ang Thong day trip, Fisherman's Village Friday market. Base at Chaweng or Lamai.

Day 5: Ferry to Koh Phangan (30 min). Settle in Thong Sala or Haad Rin.

Days 5–7: Koh Phangan. Full Moon Party (if timing works), Thong Nai Pan beaches, Bottle Beach trek, yoga, night markets. Rent a scooter to explore the north coast.

Day 8: Ferry to Koh Tao (1.5 hrs from Phangan). Check into Sairee Beach area.

Days 8–10: Koh Tao. PADI course or discovery dive, Koh Nang Yuan day trip, Shark Island snorkelling, Sairee Beach sunset.

Day 10: Return to Samui (2 hrs catamaran) for your flight, or ferry to Surat Thani for a budget flight to Bangkok or onward.

Total ferry costs for the full triangle: approximately THB 1,500–2,000 (booked through 12Go). For more detailed day-by-day planning, see our itineraries guide.

Make sure your travel insurance covers multi-island travel and water activities — especially if you're planning to dive on Koh Tao. SafetyWing covers scuba diving up to 30m depth, which covers all PADI Open Water dives.

Best Season for Island Hopping

January to April is prime season — calm seas, clear visibility, all services running. March is arguably the best single month: perfect weather, fewer crowds than December/January, and lower prices.

May to September is hit-and-miss — you'll get sunny stretches broken by afternoon storms. Ferries run normally. Ang Thong stays open most of this period. Prices drop 20–30%.

October to November is the Gulf monsoon — rougher seas, occasional ferry cancellations, and Ang Thong Marine Park closes (usually the whole of November). If you're island hopping during these months, check ferry status daily through 12Go or the operator websites. Don't book non-refundable accommodation on Koh Tao without confirming the ferry first.
