TL;DR — Which Route Should You Take?
Getting to Koh Samui is straightforward, but the route you choose makes a massive difference to your wallet. Here's the honest version:
Bangkok Airways direct flight — 65 minutes, THB 3,500–8,000 one-way. They own the airport, so there's zero competition on the route. You're paying for convenience, not value. But the airport is genuinely charming — open-air terminals, palm trees, 10 minutes to Chaweng Beach.
Budget airline to Surat Thani + Lomprayah catamaran — from THB 1,700 all-in. Fly AirAsia, Nok Air, or Thai Lion Air to Surat Thani (from THB 1,000), then bus + high-speed catamaran to Samui (THB 850). Saves you 50–70% vs Bangkok Airways. The catamaran is comfortable and takes 1.5 hours from the pier.
Overnight sleeper train + morning ferry — from THB 900 total. Train #167 departs Bangkok at 6:50pm, arrives Surat Thani 7:47am. Joint bus+ferry at 8am, on Samui by lunchtime. A proper Thai travel experience. Book the upper berth — it's cheaper and has a window.
Bangkok Airways owns Koh Samui Airport. Not operates — owns. They built it, they control the slot allocation, and no other airline can fly there without their permission. This keeps ticket prices 2–3x higher than equivalent Thai domestic routes. It's the only privately-owned commercial airport in Thailand. The budget alternative via Surat Thani exists because of this monopoly — and it's how most budget-conscious travellers actually get to Samui.
Route 1: Bangkok Airways Direct Flight
The fastest way to Koh Samui. Bangkok Airways operates 20+ daily flights from both Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK) airports. Flight time is 65 minutes. You'll land at Samui's unique open-air airport — no jet bridges, just a short walk across the tarmac under palm trees.
What It Costs
One-way fares range from THB 3,500 to THB 8,000 depending on how far ahead you book and whether it's peak season (December–February). Return flights are rarely discounted — Bangkok Airways knows they're the only option. Their "PG" flights include 20kg checked baggage and a meal, which partly justifies the premium over budget carriers on other routes.
Bangkok Airways occasionally runs flash sales (usually announced via their app or email list). If you're flexible on dates, set a fare alert on Google Flights for BKK→USM. Midweek flights (Tue–Thu) are consistently THB 500–1,000 cheaper than weekend departures.
The airport itself is worth mentioning: it's tiny, beautiful, and unlike any other airport in Thailand. Open-air check-in, garden walkways, complimentary snacks in the departure lounge. Bangkok Airways treats it like a boutique hotel lobby. You'll be in a taxi to Chaweng or Lamai within 15 minutes of touching down.
Before you fly, make sure you have travel insurance sorted. Flight cancellations and medical emergencies are the two things that can derail a trip fast — and Bangkok Airways' refund policy is strict.

Search Routes →Route 2: Budget Flight to Surat Thani + Ferry
This is how smart travellers get to Koh Samui without paying the Bangkok Airways tax. Fly a budget carrier to Surat Thani Airport (URT), then take a combined bus+ferry transfer to the island. Total journey time is about 4–5 hours door-to-door, but you'll save THB 2,000–5,000 per person versus flying direct.
The Flight
Multiple airlines fly Bangkok → Surat Thani daily: AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air, Thai VietJet, and Thai Airways. Fares start from THB 1,000 one-way if you book early. Flight time is about 70 minutes. Around 46 daily departures give you plenty of schedule flexibility.
Pack light if you're on AirAsia — their base fare is carry-on only (7kg). Add checked luggage at booking for the best rate. A good set of packing cubes will help you squeeze everything into carry-on and skip the luggage fee entirely.
The Ferry Transfer
From Surat Thani Airport, you have three main ferry operators to choose from. All include a bus transfer from the airport to their respective piers at Donsak (about 90 minutes):
- Lomprayah High-Speed Catamaran — THB 850, fastest at 1.5 hours to Samui. Modern vessels, air-conditioned, arrives at Nathon Pier. This is the one to book — it sells out in peak season, so reserve at least 2 days ahead through 12Go.
- Seatran Ferry — THB 170, conventional ferry, 1.5 hours. Cheaper but less comfortable. Arrives at Nathon.
- Raja Ferry — THB 140, car ferry, 1.5 hours. The cheapest option. Can take vehicles. Arrives at Lipa Noi on the west coast — useful if you're staying near Nathon or the south.
The most common scam at Surat Thani transport hubs is inflated "combined tickets" sold by touts inside the airport or at the bus station. They'll offer you a minivan+ferry deal at double the real price and claim the official counters are closed. Always buy ferry tickets from the official pier counter or book in advance through 12Go. The 12Go e-ticket goes straight to your phone — no tout can tell you it's "not valid."
Bring a travel pillow for the bus transfer — the road from Surat Thani Airport to Donsak Pier is about 90 minutes and the seats aren't great. A power bank is essential too — you'll want your phone charged for the ferry crossing.
If you're carrying cash for the trip, set up a Wise multi-currency card before you leave home. Thai ATMs charge THB 220 per withdrawal on foreign cards. Wise gives you the interbank exchange rate with no markup — it's what we use personally across Southeast Asia. Read more in our first-timers guide.

Lomprayah, Seatran, and Raja Ferry tickets with bus transfer included. E-ticket to your phone, no queuing at the pier.
Book Ferry Transfer →Route 3: Overnight Sleeper Train + Morning Ferry
The classic backpacker route and genuinely one of the best travel experiences in Thailand. You leave Bangkok in the evening, sleep through the night in a proper berth, wake up in Surat Thani, and catch the morning ferry to Samui. Total cost: around THB 900–1,100.
The Train
Train #167 departs Bangkok's Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal at 6:50pm and arrives Surat Thani (Phun Phin station) at 7:47am the next morning. Second-class sleeper berth costs THB 500–700 depending on upper or lower. Upper berth is cheaper and has a window — worth it for the sunrise over southern Thailand.
Book your train ticket through 12Go at least a week ahead — berths sell out, especially around holidays and Full Moon Party dates on Koh Phangan. The platform is air-conditioned, and there's a dining car serving surprisingly decent Thai food.
Pack a head torch — the overhead lights go off at 10pm and you'll need it to find things in your berth. Bring earplugs too. Thai trains are comfortable but not silent.
The Connection
At Surat Thani station, the joint bus+ferry service departs at 8:00am, arriving on Koh Samui by around 12:30pm. This is the Lomprayah combined ticket and can be booked as a single Bangkok→Koh Samui ticket through 12Go. The bus takes you directly from the train station to the Lomprayah pier — no need to arrange your own transfer.
The train arrives at 7:47am and the Lomprayah bus leaves at 8:00am. That's only 13 minutes of buffer. If the train is delayed (it happens), the bus will usually wait a few minutes — but don't count on it. Have a backup plan: you can always grab a taxi to Donsak Pier (about THB 1,500) or wait for the next Seatran or Raja Ferry departure.

Combined sleeper train and morning catamaran ticket. Single booking, e-ticket, covers the full journey from Bangkok to Samui.
Book Train + Ferry →Route 4: Bus + Ferry (Cheapest Option)
The most budget-friendly route to Koh Samui. An overnight VIP bus from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) combined with a morning ferry gets you there for around THB 800–1,100 total. Journey time: 13–15 hours.
VIP buses have reclining seats, air conditioning, blankets, and a toilet onboard. They depart in the evening (6–8pm) and arrive at Surat Thani around 5–7am. From there, you transfer to the ferry pier. If you book through 12Go, the bus+ferry combo ticket handles the pier transfer automatically.
This isn't glamorous travel, but it works. If you're a light sleeper, pack earplugs, a neck pillow, and an eye mask. The air conditioning is typically set to Arctic levels — bring a lightweight jacket or you'll freeze.
Travel Insurance for the Journey — SafetyWing

Get Covered →Ferry Operators Compared
Three companies run the Donsak → Koh Samui route. Here's how they compare:
| Operator | Price | Time | Comfort | Arrives At |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lomprayah | THB 850 | 1.5 hrs | Air-con catamaran, modern | Nathon Pier |
| Seatran Ferry | THB 170 | 1.5 hrs | Standard ferry, basic | Nathon Pier |
| Raja Ferry | THB 140 | 1.5 hrs | Car ferry, deck seating | Lipa Noi (west coast) |
Important: Raja Ferry arrives at Lipa Noi on the west coast — convenient if you're staying near Nathon or Taling Ngam, but you'll need a taxi or songthaew to reach Chaweng or Lamai on the east coast (about 30–45 minutes, THB 200–400). Lomprayah and Seatran arrive at Nathon Pier on the north coast, which has better onward transport connections.
Ferries run from approximately 6:00am to 7:00pm daily. The last Raja Ferry from Donsak is at 7pm. During monsoon season (October–November), services may be reduced or cancelled on rough-weather days — check operator websites or 12Go for real-time availability.
If you're prone to motion sickness on boats, pack motion sickness tablets before the crossing. The Gulf of Thailand is usually calmer than the Andaman side, but a choppy day on a catamaran can still catch you off guard. Sit near the centre of the vessel for the least motion.
From Koh Phangan & Koh Tao
Koh Phangan → Koh Samui
The easiest island hop in the Gulf. Multiple daily ferries, just 30 minutes, from THB 200. Lomprayah, Seatran, and Raja Ferry all run this route. If you're coming from the Full Moon Party, the morning-after ferries get busy — book ahead through 12Go.
Koh Tao → Koh Samui
Lomprayah high-speed catamaran takes about 2 hours, from THB 600. Seatran runs a slightly slower service. Both stop at Koh Phangan en route, so you can break the journey if you want. Book early in peak season — the Koh Tao→Samui route fills up fast when divers are heading to the airport.

Find Activities →Koh Samui Airport — What to Expect
USM (Samui Airport) is unlike any airport you've used before. It's open-air — no walls on the terminal buildings, just thatched roofs and tropical gardens. Bangkok Airways built it to feel like a resort. Check-in counters are outdoors. The departure lounge has free snacks, coffee, and WiFi (courtesy of Bangkok Airways — they own the place, remember).
Getting From the Airport to Your Hotel
The airport is in the northeast corner of the island, in Bo Phut district. Transport options:
- Shared minivan — THB 200–300 to Chaweng, Lamai, or Bophut. Cheapest option, but waits until the van fills up.
- Private taxi — THB 500–800 depending on destination. Fixed prices displayed on a board outside arrivals. No meters.
- Hotel pickup — Many hotels offer free airport transfers if you're staying 3+ nights. Ask when you book.
- Grab — Works on Samui but not always available at the airport. Regular taxis are more reliable for arrivals.
There's no public bus from the airport. Songthaews (shared pickup trucks) run along the ring road but don't come into the airport — you'd need to walk to the main road, which isn't practical with luggage.
If you're flying out of Samui, arrive 90 minutes before domestic flights and 2 hours before international. The airport is small and check-in is fast, but Bangkok Airways requires bag drop 60 minutes before departure for international flights. The Blue Ribbon lounge (THB 950) adds air conditioning and food if you want to escape the heat — otherwise the open-air gate area has complimentary drinks.
